About

Nancy L. Johnston is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner in private practice in Lexington, VA, USA treating adolescents and adults. She is a Diplomate and a Clinical Mental Health Specialist in Substance Abuse and Co-occurring Disorders Counseling through the American Mental Health Counselors Association.

She earned a BA in Psychology at the College of William and Mary and an MS in Counseling Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Nancy has practiced mental health and substance abuse counseling for 37 years. She has worked in public and private psychiatric hospitals, juvenile corrections, public mental health, colleges, and private practice.

She has done private practice exclusively since 2000. This has enhanced her opportunities to expand her work and writing on codependence.

Nancy‘s work in codependence has roots in both personal and professional work. Knowing the experience of relationship tangles, she has studied through her clinical work the dynamics that either feed the tangle or help to loosen and eventually undo it.

Her work in codependence allows her to combine interests and skills that include counseling theory and techniques, 12-step wisdom, and mindfulness.

A wife, mother, dancer, writer, and generally inspired person, Nancy mindfully and gratefully continues to learn, create, and share ideas that can foster a healthy self.
